When you tow, do you tense up or does your adrenaline start pumping when a traffic light suddenly turns yellow? Why? After all, your tow vehicle has enough braking power to stop it, and your trailer’s brakes are designed to stop it with room to spare too. So what’s the problem when you hitch-up to tow? It’s simple; today’s conventional brake controllers are the weakest link in the “tow-braking chain”. These controllers have their limitations, and over the past forty years or so we have learned how to accommodate for those weaknesses.

There are MAJOR PROBLEMS with today's
CONVENTIONAL BRAKE CONTROLLERS :

  • 1. If we set them TOO HIGH, our trailer bucks and kicks and burns rubber every time we even touch the brake pedal. Sometimes we even wear a flat spot on the trailer’s tires - all four or six of ‘em (you know how much a good trailer tire costs these days?).
  • 2. If we set them TOO LOW, we’re not sure if we’re going to get stopped in time. Plus, we tend to rely too much on the tow vehicle’s brakes to provide most of the stopping power. This ends up wearing out our tow vehicle’s brakes quicker than normal (have you priced a new brake job lately?)
  • 3. It seems like we’re always having to adjust the controller to accommodate for changing load weights, changing weather, road conditions, speed and so forth. This gets old (and sometimes dangerous, when we look or reach down to the controller under our dash).

SO WE SET IT ON “LOW” - AND FORGET IT - SO WHAT?

Because when you manually adjust that “gain knob” in most of today’s conventional brake controllers, you’re essentially setting the maximum limit of braking power your trailer brakes can deliver! And when your trailer brakes can only give you, say, 50% of their full stopping power, what happens? You begin to hate seeing those "orange" traffic lights and construction zone signs!
