PERCEPTIVE.
Acumen's FST perceives your towing forces.

First, a little background history on “electric trailer brakes”:

  • Today’s 5th Wheel RV’s and other trailers can easily weigh over twice as much as your tow vehicle.
  • Tow vehicles’ brake systems are not designed to stop the combined weight of itself and your trailer.
  • Therefore, electric trailer brakes were designed to do one thing; stop your trailer!
  • In addition, your trailer’s braking effort should match (or equal) your tow vehicle’s braking effort – so neither is providing more than its share of the braking!

So, what is “FST” anyway?

Look at the five major “factors” that affect your trailer brake’s performance (click to view).  When even ONE of the above factors affects your trailer think about the “physics” of the normal STOP, when pulling a trailer...what really happens?

  • First, your tow vehicle’s brakes immediately engage.
  • Since your trailer has been tooling along behind you – until its electric brakes engage, it wants to keep on going forward at the previous speed (due to its “kinetic energy”).
  • So the trailer lunges forward, bangs on the hitch and causes you, your  passengers and your cargo to be bounced and thrown all over the place.

“FORCES” are therefore exerted by your trailer onto your tow vehicle.  And where is the only place the trailer comes in contact with the tow vehicle?  At the hitch, of course!

So where would you say is the best location to measure all of the many variables and their resulting FORCES the trailer is exerting on your tow vehicle?  At the hitch, of course!  So, why in the world would you measure this from under your dash?

Or say you try to slow down a little due to slower traffic ahead, but your trailer brakes are a little wet, so they aren’t quite as effective as normal, where does that difference in braking performance show up?  Or what if you loaded up your trailer – to it’s maximum rated capacity?

All of these conditions create a measurable “FORCE” exerted by your trailer on your tow vehicle.

But, how and where would you accurately measure or monitor these changing FORCES affecting your trailer?  You need to measure these forces where they’re all taking place – AT THE TRAILER’S HITCH ITSELF!

That’s why all ACUMEN Brake Systems include strain-gauge “FORCE-SENSORS” – constantly sensing the critical, ever-changing FORCES exerted by your trailer.  And they’re all measured AT THE TRAILER ITSELF – not somewhere up, under your tow-vehicle’s dash!

This is the new world of ACUMEN’s patented Force Sensing Technology.

The readings, measured by the FST sensors (located at the trailer’s hitch), constantly update information sent to Acumen’s specially programmed Brake-Command Module – providing instantaneous and accurate brake-power readings to your trailer’s electric brakes hundreds of times per second.  As our many loyal customers will tell you...
